In preparing this edition, Recorder Magazine editor Andrew Mayes has selected music that is well suited to recorders. This must have been some task, given that the original keyboard collection contained some 256 pieces, by a variety of composers. The music is rather unusual, with some fascinating rhythmic and harmonic interplay. It promises to present some satisfying challenges to most ensembles, as it is fairly demanding to put together. This arrangement makes a valuable contribution to the trio repertoire and is also an excellent way of discovering 15th-century music.
