The Joplinesque Rag for the family’s Scottish black cat has plenty of semiquaver activity well distributed among the parts, with a good scattering of chromatics and modulations, making it more demanding than any of the pieces reviewed above. The Blues, like the Rag, is in G major and is in memory of the family dog. Its first phrase is on the treble and ends beautifully on a long bottom F. The passage of the melody from part to part is made transparent by the lightly-scored accompaniment, especially in the middle chorus. Two pieces that give players plenty to think about and much pleasure in the thinking.
