Review of RB 13

Dennis Bamforth
Quartet 2, Op. 22 (SATB)

This is the most ambitious and demanding of my present batch. Its manner is largely and skilfully contrapuntal, the two themes undergoing many benign genetic modifications and generating some impressive countermelodies among which I particularly liked one featuring extended, opened-out triads. All sorts of textures and sonorities are to be found here - a passage in trailing augmented triads, soon followed by one of diminished triads, these are but two moments in a large span that uses the whole two-octaves range of the recorders. The gleeful presto coda comes as a complete surprise. One hopes that players will rise to the demands as well as the composer achieved his ambition.
