I had already come across Joe’s Jitters by Alyson Lewin before I was asked to review the piece. It was at the final playing session at the Northern Recorder Day Course and it was conducted by Alyson herself. It was a huge success. The catchy rhythm of the piece appeals to the young at heart however old they are and the whole piece has a toe-tapping, light-hearted feel about it. The piece is scored for two descants, treble, tenor and bass and although the rhythm is syncopated, none of the parts are difficult and could easily be tackled by intermediate players. The lower parts, whilst mainly accompanying the tune, do occasionally get a go at the syncopations, just to keep their hand in. This really enjoyable piece of music was evidently written in response to a lively pupil of Alyson, who obviously couldn’t sit still and neither will you when you come to play it.
